The French racer from the Yamaha team, Fabio Quartararo, has established himself as the leader of the 2022 MotoGP standings, following the victory at the Barcelona GP on Sunday, June 5, 2022. Quartararo has 147 points, while in second place is Aleix Espargaro with a record of 125 points. This time Espargaro made a silly mistake, which kept him from getting on the podium.
After the race, Quartararo couldn’t stop smiling and laughing. He seemed satisfied with the results obtained at the Catalunya circuit. On the other hand, Aprilia racer Aleix Espargaro could not hide his regret. He couldn’t maintain pole position, even from the start of the race. Ironically, Espargaro made a mistake at the end of the race.
After starting from pole position, Espargaro was passed by Quartararo at the first corner. From then on, Quartararo led the race until the finish flag flew. As the race drew to a close, or one lap less, Espargaro raised his hand at the finish line.
He thought the race was over, but there was still one more lap to go. The error made Espargaro lose second place. Then three drivers overtook him, namely Jorge Martin, Johan Zarco, and Joan Miro.
“I’m very happy, it was a great race,” said Quartararo. “I rode the bike from the start and kept it up until the end. With this win and finishing second last Sunday, it’s a good result for me and the team.”
While Jorge Martin seems very happy with managed to get on the podium. This gives him confidence after a disappointing season. But Martin also realized that the victory could be obtained because of the unexpected actions of Aleix Espargaro.
“It’s been a difficult season so I’m happy with this podium,” said Martin. “I saw Aleix slow down and I thought he had a mechanical problem but then realized he had made a mistake. It was an unexpected bonus.”
Currently, Quartararo has no closest rival in terms of the drivers’ standings. Francesco Bagnaia, who won the Italian MotoGP last weekend, slipped to fourth in the standings behind Zarco after exiting at corner one.
Bagnaia fell to the ground after Japanese racer Takaaki Nakagami fell. This accident is in a row because it involves Alex Rins. Fortunately, all three drivers are reported to be fine. Bagnaia’s compatriot, Enea Bastianini, also had to leave the race after 17 laps. He faced a problem with his riding Ducati.
Currently, Bastianini is in third place in the 2022 MotoGP standings with 94 points. The next race will take place at the Sachsenring Circuit, Germany, on 19 June 2022.
